Review
T. Kingfisher’s “What Moves the Dead” weaves together a gothic horror that easily traps readers in its web. I read this book in less than a day, too scared to emerge from my blanket to even get a glass of water. This novella is perfect for fans of dilapidated mansions, bizarre fungi, and a mystery that makes you believe you know what’s happening until it turns on its head in the best possible way. As autumn encroaches, this tale is a great read to curl up with as the weather gets cold. Just be sure to keep a light on.
Summary
A re-imagining of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “What Moves the Dead” follows Alex Easton, a former soldier, as they travel the moors of an alternate Europe to a decrepit manor forgotten by God and any other who might care for it. At the behest of their childhood friend, Alex enters the spider’s den, where their perception of reality is challenged as the walls begin to fall around them. Is Alex losing their mind? Or maybe, just maybe, the dead truly walk the halls of the House of Usher.
